Ok, it's 1am, I am tipsy and tired and ready for bed and all of a sudden I hear siren after siren after siren coming toward and stopping right outside my condo. There must be 12 fire trucks...the big hook and ladders, 5 or more ambulances and three streets...two of them major intersections completely blocked off. It's the condo across the street from ours. All the firemen are going in, but no residents are coming out...bizarre. This is one of the scariest things about highrise living. I just felt like sharing. Hope it's nothing major and everyone will be all right. It's just weird when at least 30 firemen have been in there for over 15 minutes. They usually come out right away when there is nothing going on.

Wow! That IS wierd! I hope everything is ok. Let us know what happens. All the firemen are still in there. My guess is it's a garbage chute fire. You know...some total idiot throws a lit ciggy or some burning food down the garbage chute. Then the smoke goes through the whole building. The firemen have to climb twenty five flights of stairs and check from floor to floor, too. Those poor guys. Everyone is probably in the lobby. This happened to us in the last condo building we lived in. It was very smoky and very scary, but we were really never in any danger of anything but a inhaling some smoke. Well, I guess that is plenty dangerous. I'll report back. I'm just surprised none of the fire trucks have left yet. Usually when it's nothing...they come and go really quickly.

Keep an eye on it.....sounds scary even if it is what you think it is. Stay safe. Thanks Emily. Looks like the coast is clear. The firefighters are starting to come out of the building. My guess is it was a chute fire. Smoky and scary...but not nearly as bad as it could have been. I have to give a shout out to the Chicago Fire Dept. After that Loop Highrise fire a few years ago where 6 people died...they have really gotten it together. There was a terrible...I mean terrible fire at the LaSalle Bank HQ last year or about a year and a half ago, and no one was hurt or killed in that one. The fire was burning out of control for hours. We watched it on TV. It jumped from floor to floor...window to window. That was like the Towering Inferno to me. They did a fabulous job with that. In our neighborhood, since it's mainly highrise condo buildings...when someone calls 911, at least 10 hook and ladders show up regardless of the emergency. They are prepared. It's comforting. Now, I'm off to bed again. #offtobed#

Wow, that would be scary. I've worked in high rise buildings before, but have never lived in one (don't think I could!).
Sounds like it turned out OK? Nancy, let us know if you find out what happened!

Sheesh, how can you go to sleep after all that!!! I am glad that it seemed to be nothing horrible. Hi Toni!!! After nearly twenty years of living in the big city I am so used to stuff like that. It's more dramatic than anything. When you hear siren after siren...you just start to think...please let it be another building and not ours. We've already had this happen to our building twice this year. This last time...there was a small fire on someone's stove with lots and lots of smoke. One of the maintenance men had to kick in the door...poor guy got some smoke inhalation. The elderly woman inside had to get taken to the hospital. I've heard she's ok. At least our situations have happened during the day. It's much more frightening in the middle of the night. No activity over there today. I'll have my hubby go talk to their doorman later and see if he can get the scoop. My guess is that it was a garbage chute fire. They're smoky, but if you catch them quickly...no real damage.

Hi Nancy! I'm glad everything turned out ok. It reminds me of an embarassing story from several years ago when we had only recently moved into our current home. We had a babysitter and came home at about midnight (also tipsy). She told us that there was a problem with a lightswitch-it threw sparks when she flipped it. So my husband walked her home, and I tried the lightswitch. It burned out the light and sent alot of sparks. I was afraid to just go to bed because I thought something could be smoldering between the walls and a fire could start while we were sleeping. So we called the fire dept. to just discuss it with them to see if they had any suggestions. Within about 4 minutes, 2 squad cars came flying down our street and blocked it off, followed by an ambulance and 3 firetrucks, all with the sirens blaring. All of our new neighbors (many of whom we had not yet met) came running out. We just stood there in the middle of it all feeling incredibly stupid!

Oh no!!! #rofl1# #rofl1# That's not really funny, but I laughed when I read it because...that is so typical. If there is even a hint of a fire...they come!!! ;D We checked with our doorman this morning and it turns out...it was nothing. One of the tenants thought they smelled smoke...so the firefighters had to check the whole building...that's what took so long.

New Totally Random. I had a dream last night that MiG was performing at some sort of an outdoor arena, and he invited me and my husband backstage. He mentioned that he needed a place to stay that night so we told him he could stay at our house. It put me in a frenzy because I knew the house was a mess, so I'd need to hurry home to clean it up and get it 'MiG ready'. Now back to the conscious world. My husband told me this morning that he woke me up from a loud dream last night, and I told him, "we have to get ready for MiG". That was, of course, followed by the eyeroll from him. Anyway, I just wanted to share that with all of you!

That is too funny, I can imagine panic you felt! I feel that every time anyone is coming over, I am not exactly a domestic goddess. Apropos of nothing, the big talk around work is that Katie Holmes is supposedly delivering at one of our local hospitals. It just happens to be the one that my younger daughter works at, but she is off today. Darn, she usually works in peds, too, and I would be able to get some good info. I would bet it is an absolute three ring circus over there.
***Well, I am watching Entertainment Tonight and nothing about TomKat or kitten in town. In fact, it shows them in Beverly Hills walking around. Another wild rumor put to rest.
