Another tragedy on the news right now. Some news sites are reporting that Natasha Richardson's family is gathering to say good-by because she is brain dead and will be taken off of life support. I am hoping that this is exaggerated and that she will pull through this.

We watch BBC News which starts in 45 minutes. They'll probably say something on that broadcast.

An official statement was released by her family tonight. She did pass away.

It seems so unfair! It's hard to imagine that the doctors couldn't do anything to save her.

The family may have been faced with an awful choice. Leave her on the ventilator brain dead or pull the plug. Probably better for Natasha not to have survived if she was going to be vegetative. We do evacuate blood from people with subdural hematomas(blood that pools inside the skull) it is very dangerous because the skull is fixed and when blood accumulates has no where to go but to press on brain tissue and the pressure of the blood can damage or destroy that tissue if left untreated too long, With her it wa a fluke accident on a bunny hill and I wonder if wherever they took her made a quick diagnosis and treatment. So sad for her family and friends. I was at a funeral home last night for a 31 year old. He had successfully battled colon cancer and had just gone through a bone marrow transplant for lymphoma and he pperfed his colong so he died from infection and not the cancer. He was such a fighter. His parents are friends of mine and it is so hard to see the faces of parents who have lost a child in the prime of his life. A teenage patient at my hospital had to have a leg amputated yesterday for the flesh eating bacteria and now is fighting for his life. He is a known athlete and this came on very sudden. All these things are flukes and we wonder why they happen. I think the message is clear though that we all need to try to really enjoy today-no guarantee what tomorrow will hold, to always let your friends and family know what they mean to you-hug and kiss your loved ones liberally and for those we have lost, celebrate their life the way they would want us to remember them. Hopefully we will all meet again in a better place where there is no pain and suffering.

Today I had to help a guy find a suit for the funeral of his twin babies. Life has no guarantees, as MB says.

That is so sad Toni. I bet you were a great help to him. I am sure his brain cells weren't really firing.

I just heard that Andy Hallett has passed away from heart disease...at age 33! He was the "host" on Angel, the green-skinned horned guy.

Yep, his character's name was Lorne and he was one of my favorite characters on the show, always there for the great one-liners. He was a very nice looking man out of the green make up....that makes two of the actors who were long-running characters on the show that have died young. Glenn Quinn, who played Doyle, died in 2002 at age 32. It took me a little while to realize that it was the same guy who had played Mark, Becky's boyfriend/husband on Roseanne for a couple years. There wasn't much anyone could have done to prevent Andy's death but Glenn's was senseless...surely someone in his close friends realized he was having mental problems and could have tried to keep him from committing suicide. Such a senseless loss. My heart goes out to Andy's family and friends.

Toni, I'm so sorry about your friend's babies. That's just awful. My sister lost a premie (she survived for about a week) and it's one of the hardest things a parent can go through. You're a good friend to help him out.
