We Will Rock You charges up the stage with rock legend Queen’s greatest hits, drama, witty one-liners and a superb cast.
By Yong Yung Shin
Now into its sixth year on London’s West End, this acclaimed rock musical is a futurist adventure set in a time when live music is banned on earth. The kids rebel, fighting against a dictatorial corporation which controls their lives and feeds them a diet of synthesized pop. The situation looks hopeless until a hero turns up—the young Galileo Figaro, played by our chat-up of the day, the highly energetic MiG Ayesa.
Forget 300 years into the future. If Galileo were living in present times, what would he say about the current state of our music charts?
There is still some great music being made today. Galileo would love U2, the Foo Fighters, Jet, Wolfmother, The Killers and even have a crush on Pink. He would have a problem with High School Musical and possibly the re birth of the Spice Girls, as well as some of the mundane hiphop that exists today, but he would not have abandoned all hope.
What part of the musical do you think most reflects our present day circumstances?
I think we are living in desperate times. The show refers to problems relating to global warming. We still have a chance to prevent these catastrophic effects from taking place, if we act now. It also talks about kids having cyber-friends as opposed to real-life interaction. I think the invasion of MySpace and Facebook is the beginning of the fulfillment of this prophecy.
So we guess you are a big Queen fan?
Yes I am. There has never been a band like them before, nor has there been one like them since.
What rocks about Queen’s music?
They were extremely unique—all exceptional musicians in their own right. Each individual member of the band has written world wide number one hits. Their music is flamboyant, melodramatic, unashamedly brash and outlandish. They make no apologies for their music, and they have written some of the greatest rock anthems ever recorded, from the almost Neanderthal war cry of ”We Will Rock You” to the hauntingly profound ”Who Wants To Live Forever” to the outrageously delightful ”Bohemian Rhapsody.” Queen was, and always will be, a phenomenon.
It looks like a highly-strung show. How do you keep your energy up and the performance fresh?
Red Bull. I never get tired of doing the show. I find something new in every performance and relish the challenge to make it as though it is the first time I have ever done the show. The music is timeless and I never tire of it. But seriously...Red Bull.—Yong Yung Shin
We Will Rock You is on from Mar 28 onwards, Tue-Fri, 8pm, Sat-Sun 2pm, 8pm. Esplanade Theatre, 1 Esplanade Dr., 6828-8377. $40-170 from Sistic.
