This is an incredible opportunity to 'link up' with the rest of the entire world.....will YOU do it? Are YOU up to it? Can you afford NOT to? It all started out with a small gesture by the citizens of Sydney Australia in 2007 and became a global event in 2008. Let's make 2009 a shout out!!! Check it out www.youtube.com/watch?v=1CRs-7lRlPo Register your participation at www.earthhour.org/ Now can you pass this on to everyone you know so they can join in too? (there's still time!!) Thanks -- and hugs to all! gee

Gee, this is a great idea but it is right in the middle of March Madness. I would have a hard time powering down our house unless I kick the male members to a sports bar. I'll have to see if I can lock them out

This would be fascinating to watch from space....as each time zone would go dark, one at a time. Unfortunately, there will still be all the city lights glowing.

Actually toni -- not really I don't think -- what Sydney and the other cities have/are doing is turning off all non essential lights -- so light in/on buildings, bridges, marquees - that sort of thing -- the street lights and lights needed for safety purposes are still on - but if you go to the earth hour site and check out the gallery/photos section (especially if you go to earth hour canada you'll see before and after shots -- downtown Toronto is AMAZING!!! Sydney is AMAZING.........but from outer space I'll bet the lights would be really noticeably 'missing'!!! I can tell you that because I work for a municipal court, our building is all nicely lit up at night -- our maintenance guy will be there Sat night to turn out all the lights, indoor and out because the building is after all, closed. Last year the Philharmonic was playing at the theatre and instead of lighting the stage, they had little stand lights on all the music stands -- the pix are lovely -- very cosy. I'll be in Niagara Falls for dinner -- they too are registered participants. I expect to see the lights on the Falls themselves shut off, the lights on and around all the casinos and larger buildings turned off, the casino will not, of course close but I'll bet the little bars on each floor might go by candle light! As for the game MB -- how about the TV and some candles??? lol....tell the guys that you're giving them the 'movie theatre' experience!! ahahaha.....(and make your popcorn ahead of time!!) Anyway -- that's my pitch --- eta - Suzie McNeil will be performing at Nathan's Phillip Square (City Hall) Toronto for the Earth Hour celebration in the 'Big Smoke'! hugs

I haven't really heard anything about earth hour around here, so I guess our area isn't all into it much. I'll try to remember to do my part, though.

Awesome MB and toni!!! ;D
Canada is in the top 5 of countries with the most registered cities participating (early last week we were number one but dropped down) -- stats are on their site --
Canada is offering a TRIP you can win when you register! So it's meeting the polar bears -- hey a free trip is a free trip!!! heehee.....
hugs gee

Finally heard a blurb about Earth Hour on the local news, but I didn't catch if Toledo was participating or not. I work until 9:15, so I guess I have to have Darrell pull the plugs at home. I wish work would participate by closing at 8:30, lol. It will be interesting to see if lots of lights are off as I drive home...I don't suppose the street lights will be off.

I would think that street lights and traffic lights would be considered ESSENTIAL lighting as would security lighting so you may not have to drivce home completely in the dark, Toni. This is a good idea though and I think I'll do my part... I like watching tv with no lights on, as Gee said, the movie theatre effect... especially when I'm watching a movie.

I'd planned on doing it but we got back from hockey and dinner at 8.45, and the stench from my two funky boys demanded that I give them a bath before bed. I thought about doing it by candle light, but that would have been too exciting for them so I just bathed them and got them in bed and then sat in the dark for a while until they fell asleep, lol.

Our power was out for three and a half days in September after there were high winds from the Hurricane Ike remnants-in Ohio no less. Showering by candlelight or flashlight is highly overrated and going to work with room air dried hair a bit embarassing. You were smart to shower with lights on.

By the time I got home, it was over, and Darrell had forgotten all about it. On the way home, I didn't notice any lack of lights even on side streets. More publicity was needed around here.
