Michael Johns' Last Words on Idolmiamiherald.typepad.com/idol_watch/2008/04/michael-johns-l.html Took awhile to get transcript from the Michael Johns exit interview upon leaving American Idol (boo, hiss) last week. But here goes, Michael's final thoughts on having left the show:Surprised that you got booted? I would be lying to say that I wasn’t shocked. I hadn’t been in the bottom three and I thought the last two or three weeks had been my strongest. We’re in this competition and stuff can happen, and it did. Song choice regrets? I’ve never chosen a song based on what the competition is doing, do you know what I’m saying? I think I pick songs that mean something to me lyrically and emotionally. Singing Dream On by Aerosmith with a 20-piece orchestra, I’ve said it on the show, that’s amazing. Which performance turned out the most like you’d planned? It’s All Wrong, But It’s All Right, the Dolly week, turning a country song into a soul song. That’s my niche. I’m just sad I’m not going to do any more of it. Song he'd planned to do on Mariah week, had he lasted: A really cool soul version, blues soul version again of Vision of Love. It was hot, too, so I’m a little bummed. One of his idols, Dolly Parton: She was just saying what a fan of mine she was. That’s just so surreal, to hear Dolly Parton saying, “I can’t wait to sing a duet with you one day.” That’s awesome. Simon says ... oh whatever!: Sometimes Simon is off the mark, to be honest. Most times he’s on, and I respect his opinion a lot, but he wanted me to sing that soul blues stuff every week. I’m a rock soul singer. Do you know what I mean? I like to do both genres, so I wasn’t necessarily going to always hand it to what the judges said every week. Do you know what I mean? You have to go out there and say this is the kind of record I am going to make and this is the sound I do. Some weeks they loved it, some weeks they didn’t. The way Ryan handled the dismissal was cruel -- commenting that last year no one went home on Idol Gives Back week, and then lowering the boom. Thoughts? Look, I get the television aspect of this competition, but it was tough. I thought OK, I’m going home and then he did that and I was, “Wait a second, maybe I’m not going home. Maybe they’re just having a good laugh.” I hadn’t been in the bottom three before, so I was thinking that was a possibility. When reality set in and Ryan gave me a look as if to say, “Look, I am so sorry I had to do that,” but you get it. I don’t hold it against Ryan or anything. After this I’m hopefully going to make a great record. It won’t be the last you see of me. Chris Daughtry has said not winning Idol was more of a career booster, than winning, for him anyway. Thoughts?: I’ve heard Chris say that as well. Look, winning the thing or not winning Idol, it really depends on the artist. It depends on what album you make afterwards. It depends whether or not on the show you were absolutely true to yourself and did not change. I think the people who have succeeded after Idol, from the Kimberly Lockes to the Carrie Underwoods, that’s the one common thing, that they’re themselves and they stayed true to their hearts. Besides Parton, who else has contacted you?: I got a reach-out from Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman, saying I was their favorite and they watched every week. It’s just amazing how far this show reaches, everyone from a Dolly Parton to Keith Urban. It’s insane. Did the neckerchief play a part in your dismissal?: No, I don’t think so. I mean, the ascot that killed America. No. It was a fun outfit. It was time to step it up a little bit stylistically and I went for it. No regrets there. Thoughts on this season: Especially this year, it has been written in the press … saying this is the best top 12 they’ve ever had, and the nicest top 12, which is another compliment. Of any season that I could have been on, to be a part of this one was just really special. The fact that there was no laughing stock, there were no jokers, do you know what I mean? I think we had a lot of respect in the public eye, and that’s something I can be very proud of. Professional experience. Help or hindrance: I didn’t know how that would work out for me. The thing about this season is a lot of us have made records, worked with producers, had deals or something cooking, do you know what I mean? I think that’s why you’re seeing such a strong top 12. It’s really refreshing for me to be on a show that had so much talent this year. No one was really necessarily competing against any one, like me and Dave Cook going for the rocker vote, or Brooke and Carly. It was really cool to be with ten individual artists. Did it help me or hurt me? I don’t know. As Simon says, the show is only as good as the talent that walks through the door. For some reason, the way that it worked this year was like they wanted it to be a singing competition rather than a TV show. No controversy of Sanjaya or whoever else. They wanted to make it a really good singing competition, and I think that’s what they did. I applaud them for it. Advice to fans who vote on Idol: Nothing has sunken in just quite yet, but the backlash that I’m seeing in snippets of the press ... that means a lot. It means that I struck a nerve somewhere. This year more than any other year I really believe, especially with this top eight, that you can’t let the person that’s your favorite go, “He had a great week,” or, “She had a great week,” and I’m going to give him half of my votes and then I’m going to do the other one who didn’t do so well. A split vote like that can happen and unfortunately, the people that you thought were going to be safe go home.

David Cook’s Analog Heart Pulled From Amazon Published April 22nd, 2008 in American Idol, Record News, David Cook, AI7 Top 12 and S7 Top 12. Tags: David Cook. Hope you David Cook fans out there got a chance to download your copy of his pre-idol CD Analog Heart, ’cause it’s no longer available on Amazon. Go ahead and click the banner. The message you get is “Not Available.”
It looks like Roger Friedman’s article, posted Monday on the FOX website, has led to the album being pulled from Amazon. (Hello, Roger: David studied Chris Daughtry’s audition prior to his own audition before the judges–they aren’t actually buddies. And do your effing homework. David Cook isn’t the first Idol to sell a pre-Idol CD during a run on the show.)
Currently Carly Hennessy Smithson’s CD is still available on Amazon. Chris Sligh sold a CD through Amazon during last year’s competition, and Taylor Hicks sold his pre-Idol CD, Under the Radar through an independent record store in Birmingham.
Could it be that TPTB had the album pulled, because David’s CD was showing up on the Amazon rankings? Or that other media outlets were beginning to pick up the story? It’s not clear how many copies have been sold, but Amazon mp3 downloads only make up 2% of the total paid downloads in the US market. Hardly a “major” market, I’d say. Although Analog Heart was number #1, considering those stats, I can’t imagine it was burning up the sales charts. This CD has been available for awhile. If it violated the terms of his contract with AI, it would have been pulled months ago, one would think.
Friedman is a little late to the “ringer” controversy. It raged months ago, when it was discovered that Carly Smithson, Kristy Lee Cook and Michael Johns had honest-to-goodness major record deals before they auditioned for Idol. David Cook is considered a non-ringer in the controversy. The fact that he released an independent CD two years ago that’s now available on rinky-dink Amazon mp3 downloads hardly elevates him to ringer status in my book. Nice, Friedman–making a mountain out of a molehill.
The Idols comings and goings always have and always will be grist for the rumor mill (see: David Archuleta and his rumored stage daddy. That shiz can’t be easy for the kid as he tries to compete in this stress-filled contest), but it’s a little annoying to see something this innocuous blown up into a big deal. The upside of the CD being pulled–maybe the story will stop right here instead of growing legs.

Apparently a bunch of Jason's fans got a gift of 105 balloons together with messages and it took 5 vans to deliver them all from the store!! They were at an event tonight and the vans were driving all over town trying to find him. They finally caught up with him when he got back and he got all of them. There were so many, The Davids had to help him carry them all. Apparently he's all smiles and laughing. There were 7 bunches of 15. One of his friends contacted either the LA Times or some other media outlet and they're sending a reporter to cover it. They're expecting pictures tomorrow. How cool is that?!! **I'm not sure about that many vans for 105 balloons, but they had all different kinds and all different sizes. Each bunch had a different message from the fans.
