Can't wait to hear MJ singing "One" . Joyce, that's one of my all time favorites too Hi Sandy! It's a great song, isn't it? Just a reminder to watch MJ and Carly on Ellen today. Maybe some of you have already seen it? The show is just starting now here. Nancy, that's a great pic of Jason!

click here for USA TodayMichael Johns: 'I would be lying to say I wasn't shocked' Michael Johns wants his fans to know he's "going to give you guys a good record by next year." By Luz Elena Avitia, USA TODAY Booted American Idol contestant Michael Johns chatted with reporters Friday, following his unexpected ouster Thursday night. USA TODAY listened in on the conference call. Q: What thoughts were going on in your head while you were performing last night? A: That's just it, I wasn't thinking, I just was feeling. I'm glad that came across. … I would be lying to say I wasn't shocked. I hadn't been in the bottom three and I thought definitely the last two to three weeks have been my strongest. But we're in this competition and stuff can happen and it did (chuckles). Q: For inspiration week, when you saw everyone else was singing ballads, did you think singing a rock song would be an advantage?A: I've never chosen a song based on what the competition is doing. It's like I pick songs that mean something to me, lyrically and emotionally. So to sing Dream On by Aerosmith with a 20-piece orchestra, it's amazing. Q: No regrets on song choice this week, then?A: Absolutely no regrets at all, mate. Q: Which performance turned out the most like you planned?A: It's All Wrong But It's All Right, definitely the Dolly week, turning the country song into a soul song. That's my niche. I'm just sad I'm not going to get to do any more of it. Q: Which song were you planning to do for Mariah Carey week?A: A really cool blues/soul version of Vision of Love. It was hot, too, so I'm a little bummed. Q: How was it working with Dolly Parton?A: Absolutely amazing. I got to speak to her this morning, and she was just saying what a fan of mine she was. It's just so surreal to hear Dolly Parton saying that, "I can't wait to sing a duet with you one day." That's just awesome. Q: What did you really think about Simon Cowell's comments?A: I respect his opinion, but he wanted me to sing that soul/blues stuff, like, every week, but you can't. I'm a rock/soul singer; I like to do both genres so I wasn't just going to necessarily pan toward what the judges said. You have to go out and say, "This is the kind of record I want to make and this is the sound I do." Q: Ryan Seacrest gave a cruel twist last night, mentioning how last year for Idol Gives Back, they didn't vote anyone off. How do you feel about that?A: I get the television aspect of this competition. It was tough because I thought, "OK, I'm going home," and then they said that and I'm like, "Oh, wait a second, I'm not going home, maybe they're just having good laugh," and I hadn't been in bottom three before, so I was thinking that was a possibility. But then reality set in and Ryan gave me look as if to say, "Look, I am so sorry I had to do that to you." You know, you get it; you're in this business, so you get it. I don't hold it against Ryan or anything. Q: There have been some comparisons with Chris Daughtry and being eliminated before your time. Do you see yourself as the Daughtry of this season?A: I've been hearing that a bunch this morning. What an honor. Chris is an amazing artist and a great guy above that. I've talked to him a few times, so to be put in that category, I have nothing but good things to say. Q: What do Australians do to drown their sorrows?A: (Laughs.) We're a pretty big beer-drinking country so that's probably what I'll be doing here in a bit. Q: Have you heard from other people, like record companies or celebs?A: Yeah, I got a reach-out from Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman saying I was their favorite and they watched every week. It's amazing how far this show reaches. It's insane. Q: Do you think your ascots that you wore two weeks in a row had anything to do with getting the least amount of votes?A: No, it was a fun outfit, it was time to step it up a little bit stylistically and I went for it. No regrets there. Q: Anything you want to say to fans?A: It's been overwhelming; I've been getting letters, flowers, gifts. Just thank you and see you on tour. I'm going to give you guys a good record by next year. Q: After the show, what did judges say to you?A: Paula grabs me and goes, "Look, I have no doubt in my mind that I'm going to a concert you're doing one day. You're super-talented." Randy gave me, "Dawg, I can't wait to see what you do with your career." Simon told America that they're going to miss me and I'm a good guy — hearing you're a good guy from Simon, that's really cool. Q: Was your wife there the entire time?A: Yeah, and if you look back at last night's footage, just before I'm about to sing, when it started to sink in, I look over to her and she mouthed, "I love you" to me. And you see me take this big breath and I clicked into performance mode and sucked it up and tried to do my best. She's really special. Q: Did you hear the booing in the audience last night?A: Yeah, I definitely was aware of it. It was pretty loud in there. It just gave me solace that I struck a nerve with a lot of people. It made me feel really special. It shows you no one's safe. The public can think week to week, "Oh, they did a good performance, they're coming off of a good run, I'm going to vote for someone else who maybe didn't have as good a night." You just have to vote for your favorite. Q: Where did you get the Dolly T-shirt from (that Johns wore on elimination night during Dolly week)?A: We were backstage getting dressed, and one of the stylists hung up this vintage Dolly Parton T-shirt on the door as a gag, so I said, "What is that? Can I wear it?" and he goes, "No it's just a gag." And I go, "Oh, no, I'm going on TV and wearing that." Just tried to lighten up a little bit. And Simon gave me a look to say, "Man, you are crazy." It was all worth it.

click here for Herald SunMichael Johns given star treatment after American IdolApril 16, 2008 12:00amTHINGS are looking up for Australia's Michael Johns despite his shock dismissal from American Idol, including hanging out with Ashton Kutcher and a call from Dolly Parton. The Perth-born 29-year-old, who struggled for a decade in the US to establish a music career, has been offered numerous recording deals since his elimination last week. He's also had enough brushes with A-List celebrities since to dine out on for decades to come. A few hours after the jaws of American Idol's 30 million TV viewers dropped to the floor when Johns was asked to leave, his own idol, country singer Dolly Parton, called his mobile phone. "There was a voice on the phone and it said 'Michael, this is Dolly'," Johns, a guest on US TV talkshow Regis & Kelly recalled. "She said 'You have a great career ahead of you and I'd like to write with you and maybe do a duet'." After his surprise send-off Johns jetted off to New York and dropped in to the set of NBC TV show Saturday Night Live (SNL) where Hollywood star Ashton Kutcher was the guest host. Johns was invited back to the SNL after-party where Kutcher, his wife Demi Moore and plenty of other A-listers, including Cameron Diaz, partied late into the night. "Demi Moore came up to me, gave me a big hug and said 'You were robbed'," Johns said. "I was standing there thinking 'If this is Demi Moore hugging me then I'm freaking out right now'." The night got better. Johns was then invited to the SNL after-party's after-party. It was at a Manhattan bar and Kutcher and Moore had organised a band to entertain their friends, but the band failed to turn up. "Demi came up and said 'Would you sing?', " Johns, shaking his head, said. "It was weird. "A guy played keyboards and then Ashton and I were singing. "It was so surreal." Johns, who was considered one of the top three competitors on American Idol before the shock elimination, said he was not about to let his fame from the reality TV show go to waste. "It's time to get to work now," he said.

Informativepost.comAmerican Idol: Chasing the Dream, But Coming Up Shortby Amy Cox May 8th, 2008 @ 05:55 AM Every season on American Idol, some contestants that peak early, and then fail to live up to their earlier performances. That has been the case in a dramatic fashion on this season of American Idol. With an exceptionally talented cast of performers, weaker performances are noticed and pointed out with more severity than in seasons past. As the season winds down, it has become obvious who the early bloomers were as opposed to the contestants that have sustained or built upon their momentum as the contest progresses. Michael Johns was one American Idol contestant who gave it his all from the early stages of the competition. In Hollywood week, he impressed judges and fans alike, taking on Queen in a way that has never been done on an American Idol stage. Something happened when Johns made it into the top twelve, though, and that something was not good. He got lost among the talent that was flowing on the Idol stage. He took to the sidelines in a competition that showcased more talent than ever before. Maybe it was nerves, or maybe it was song choice, but he quickly faded. His downfall started on Beatles night, when he did A Day in the Life. Johns was unfortunately never able to recover. Even though he was never in the bottom three, he was voted out a few weeks later when he tackled Dream On by Aerosmith. While he had vocally recovered after the Beatles fiasco, it did not matter at that point. He had failed to live up to his initial performances, and that killed him in the end. Carly Smithson was another American Idol contestant who smothered under the comparison of her former self. While most of her performances were technically well done, it hurt her because the audience knew what she was capable of. She had shown that she could be a wonderful singer with an enormous range. She initially appeared to be a tough girl who liked to have fun on the stage. That quickly changed though. She turned into a scared little girl who wanted so badly to impress Simon. Her performances showed too much restraint, and failed to be as breathtaking as the initial performances. Her inability to live up to her potential got her voted off American Idol. Brooke White suffered many of the same problems as Carly Smithson. Initially, White looked comfortable on the American Idol stage. She won fans over with her rich, sultry voice on songs such as Let it Be. However, White never again showed the same talent and emotion as she did on Let it Be. Her future performances paled in comparison. In a sense, the Beatles did her in. She was so good on that performance that anything less than great would be a death sentence. She peaked too early. Instead of getting better with time, she got worse. American Idol does not kick off all of the contestants that peak early, though. For example, David Archuleta wowed the American Idol viewers with his take on John Lennon’s Imagine. The performance won over the better part of American Idol viewers. Everyone was amazed that a boy of only seventeen could invoke so much emotion into the song. After that performance, though, it has been as if Archuleta is chasing that type of performance, but coming up short. He wants to sing like that again, but he is a nervous wreck. He has become so stiff that he cannot bring anything new into performances. Jason Castro is another American Idol contestant that has been able to stay, even though he bloomed too quickly and then faded. Castro’s best performance was, by far, Hallelujah. That was the song that made American Idol viewers sit up and pay attention. He showed so much emotion, and really connected with the audience. That was weeks ago, and he has yet to show that same amount of emotion or intimacy in any of his performances. Luckily for him, he has continued to get voted through. While David Cook has maintained consistency throughout the American Idol competition, there is one performer who has managed to turn it up a notch and do what is expected of her. Syesha Mercado started off the season rather slowly. She did not have a huge fan base, and it was expected that she would be voted off quickly. However, Syesha managed to change things up and improve on nearly a weekly basis. Instead of giving her best performance out of the gate, she is building up to it. The American Idol viewers know that the best is yet to come. That has helped her tremendously. In the world of American Idol, it is never surprising to see performers do their best work early on, and then fade. This season has not disappointed in that aspect. Even with the performances getting weaker, it is still a great season. There are a lot of talented performers who are capable of doing great things.

The Sydney Morning HeraldIdol judges pale next to rugger buggersElicia Murray and Kerry Coleman May 6, 2008Came in swinging … the Australian-born American Idol contestant Michael Johns yesterday. Photo: Edwina PicklesTHE Australian contender eliminated from this year's American Idol was ready for judges' slings and arrows. Michael Johns had faced far worse when he pulled on a boxing kangaroo costume as a mascot for a rugby team in his home city of Perth. "All the yobbos after they'd had a few beers would lure you over with kids and then try to take punches at you, so I got really good at knowing when it was an actual fan who wanted me to say 'hello' and when I just had to come in swinging." Johns made it to the top eight of the extreme karaoke contest, regularly wowing the judges with his blues-rock vocals - even earning comparisons with the late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence - until his surprise elimination on April 10. But the 29-year-old, who has lived in the US for a decade and married a Texan last year, refused to play the ethnic card, saying he had copped no criticism for being an Australian in an American contest. "America really believes in the great melting pot." Johns arrived in Sydney yesterday on a promotional tour before the series finale, which screens on FOX8 on May 22 at 7.30pm. After his Idol commitments are over, he hopes to work on an album and maybe one day collaborate with fellow expat Keith Urban. "You know, the two Australians' bluesy-country thing."
