This thread is to share exciting, inspirational and touching moments from the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.
Even the opening segment by Tom Brokaw was moving. What beautiful scenery and moving comments. The tragic loss of the Olympic athlete in the luge competition is a sobering event that reminds one of how dangerous many events are, and what risks and sacrifices are made by the competitors and their families.

We're watching!!
So excited for the Parade of Nations!! It's appropriate that the Ceremonies tonight are dedicated to the Georgian Luger who lost his life today. So sad.

The moment of silence was a very nice gesture, as was his team there to carry on. When you watch the tape of the accident, it's so sad because higher walls or post protection could have made a difference. But I guess that's the same hindsight you get when you see the accident that took Dale Earnhardt's life or any accident for that matter. The 'if only' is always too late. The ceremonies were beautiful, and kudos to the torch bearers who took the ending snafu in stride. To me the missing side just reminded me of the open border with us. Living up here Canada doesn't seem like a different country, we take their coin at the store, and it's just across the lake.

Wasn't there news before that Suzie Mcneil's song (Believe) was going to be part of the Winter Olympics? What happened? Or did I misunderstood it?

I wondered the same thing Eye. I know she was going to Vancouver to be there and then has gigs tonight and tomorrow in other places in BC. I slept through part of the opening ceremonies and thought I must have missed her.

I have been reading by how many have crashed so far and how many concerns there were about the design of this track and think it may be really foolish to continue this sport for these Oplympics. There are similar concerns about the downhill skiing because of the rain and temperatures making the conditions so hazardous that they have postponed the event but if there is no way to correct the luge then.....

Suzie's song was sung by Sarah McLaughlin. I felt that they should have allowed Suzie to sing her own song, even if she isn't as well known as Sarah. I also thought the writer of Hallelujah should have sung his own song, he is Canadian, too. Hopefully Suzie benefited (and greatly so) financially from her song being used. And woooooo hoooooooo for Apollo, another medal!
*heard that Suzie's song had been used for promotions only, Sarah sang some other Believe song.

the short track races are really wild, anything can happen. Seems to me that last olympics Apollo lost out on winning one of his races because of some similar wild contact, not sure if it was a pre-lim or a final. I hope he wins some golds this year. And kudos to the american mogul gal...very nice win.

Is it just me, or is this the first time they have used snowpaint to outline the downhill track? It really doesn't look very professional, but I suppose it's a safety factor...but I always thought they were supposed to know what flags to ski between.

Toni, I don't remember anything but flags in the downhill either.
It was so touching when Alexandre Bilodeau of Canada won the Men's Moguls and he said his brother, who has cerebral palsy, is his inspiration. He also said when he didn't feel like training, he thought of what it would be like if he couldn't get out of a wheelchair like his brother. He seems like such a good guy - and how wonderful for Canada to get the gold on their home turf. Congrats to Alexandre Biladeau and Canada on the gold, and also big congrats to Aussie Dale Begg-Smith on his silver, and to Bryon Wilson of the U.S. on his bronze.
It's so cool seeing Apolo in prime form and winning more medals! He's always exciting to watch.
I wonder how many boxes of kleenexes I'll go through in these Olympics! LOL There are so many moving and touching moments.

How about the US ski teams - wow. They've really come through. Hurray for their great results! Bode Miller seems to have matured and become an even stronger skier mentally and physically.
The half pipe was so cool - Shaun White is amazing! The guys and the girls were all fabulous. Torah Bright seemed so happy - it's so cool her parents surprised her and could see her win the gold medal in person. Gretchen Bleiler fell, but I was so impressed with the height!

I was rooting for the Canadian guy who had gone through bad times, several rehabs, etc. He did so well until the finals when he went too high and crashed. I don't really know what the sport is called, but it's like a skiing free for all!

The americans ice dancing to Phantom of the Opera was amazing! They were marvelous! The choreography was my favorite of all the pairs. It was really creative. The Canadians - Virtue and Moir - were just as Tracy Williams described - exquisite! They were so graceful and emotionally connected. They almost seemed to float across the ice. I was rooting for the Canadian guy who had gone through bad times, several rehabs, etc. He did so well until the finals when he went too high and crashed. I don't really know what the sport is called, but it's like a skiing free for all! Toni, I didn't see the event, but saw the highlights. Was it ski cross? I was pulling for the Canadian who has overcome a lot too! Now I'm looking forward to the U.S. women's hockey game against Canada for the gold on Thursday, and of course ladies figure skating and more skiing. Oh yeah - Apolo Ohno too! There are too many events to mention. I wish the Olympics could go on longer, but my eyes would get glazed over if I kept watching at this pace! LOL
