MANILA, Philippines --- Filipino-Australian rock star MiG Ayesa, who shot to fame when he became a top finalist on “Rock Star: INXS,” is back in the country to play an irrepressible rock star in Atlantis Productions’ “Rock of Ages.”
In an interview with Bulletin Entertainment and select members of media on June 6, Ayesa admits being challenged by playing such a complex character who has “his own world, his own reality.”
“Stacee Jaxx is awesome fun---the kind of rockstar I was afraid of being. I’m sure people would relive their youth [through him and the music]. Playing the character is the best fun I’ve ever had,” said he, who first breathed life into the role on Broadway.
In a release, Stacee Jaxx is described as this “famous, sexy, and over the top” rockstar whose love story is played against the backdrop of “wild nights and the energy of the Sunset Strip” some three decades ago.
The singer–songwriter also loves the music in the five-time Tony Award nominated Broadway musical. These include hits by Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and White Snake all of which demand a lot from MiGs as singer. Though he has done these songs countless of times, the singer’s enthusiasm has picked up with the knowledge that he’ll be performing with some of the best Filipino singers there are. “Rock of Ages,” boasts of having such names as Vina Morales, Nyoy Volante, Jett Pangan, Aiza Seguerra and Jinky Llamanzares on the marquee.
Does he have inputs in the Manila production?
“No, I leave everything up to the director. I just who him what I do onstage. I know it’s going to be a totally different production, direction, choreography, staging…it’s like a revamp, an entirely new show.”
Atlantis Productions’ “Rock of Ages” runs from June 15 to July 8 at the Carlos P. Romulo Theater at the RCBC Plaza in Makati.
Next month, MiG returns to London to resume work on the Michael Jackson-inspired concert titled “Thriller – Live!” Opening three months before the King of Pop’s death in 2010, the singer-songwriter notes that the show enjoys quite a following. In it, he sings the more rock-oriented Jackson songs including “Dirty Diana,” “Beat It” and three more songs.
Asked if he will bring to London more Tagalog words than when he was here the last time, MiG laughed and said:
“I’m trying to learn Tagalog, di ba? My Tagalog is pangit but I’m working on it.”
