Hello! I know we may have talked about what we cook for Turkey Day last year ... but I love to find out what all the holiday traditions are... so I thought I'd ask if anyone has any great casserole or pie or any dish out of the ordinary recipes to post! I'm going to be making... Pecan Pie Pumpkin Pie Banana Pudding (all these are no brainers so I'll not post the recipes) but I also make Cabbage Casserole that I love!... I'll post the recipe tomorrow... (it's actually my Aunts) I know different areas make different dressing/stuffing... I of course make Cajun Cornbread stuffing... but I'd LOVE to see ya'lls recipes Ok.. if you guys have time I hope to see them! love Ames ***************************************************8 revision ... I would LOVE to hear all your holiday recipes!

Amy, I love this idea, and I'd really like that cabbage casserole recipe. One of the things on my list this year is veggies so I'm trying a few new recipes. One is a twice baked sweet potato recipe that is supposed to be savory rather than sweet. The other is a broc casserole that has bleu cheese as an ingredient. If anyone's interested I have a fairly easy sour cream apple pie recipe from Nick's Fish Market.

My daughter in Australia is going to attempt an American Thanksgiving feast this weekend for her fiance's family and she asked for some of the family recipe. Here is one we have every year that belonged to my grandmother. It is called party time salad but we fondly call it green stuff. It is good although when I look at the ingredients I am not sure why it is good. Ingredients 1 15-16 oz can crushed pineapple 1 3 oz package Lime Jello 2 3 oz packages Philadelphia Creem Cheese(may use one 6 oz package) 1/3 cup chopped pimentos 1 cup whipped cream or 8 oz tub coolwhip 1 cup diced celery 1 cup chopped walnuts Instructions Heat pineapple to boiling then removed from heat add Jello powder and stir until dissolved. Chill until partially set. Soften the cream cheese(let it sit out at room temp until soft) and stir into the jello pineapple mixture. Stir in pimentoes, celery, walnuts and cool whip or whipped cream. and blend well. Put mixture in dish or mold and refrigerate until completely set/

Wow the Green Stuff sounds GREAT!! I'll definitely try that... we usually had some sort of Jell-O salad too! I have no clue what type of recipe tho... Here's my cabbage casserole recipe! CABBAGE CASSEROLE
Brown 1 lb. hamburger meat, 1 lb. Owens regular sausage, 1 large onion &
1 clove garlic. Salt & pepper to taste.
Add 1/2 c. rice and 1 cup water. Cook 5 minutes.
Add 1 large head of cabbage chopped. Cook 5 minutes.
Stir well, add sauce and bake 350° for 1 1/2 hours.
Sauce:
1 c. milk
1/2 stick butter
1/2 lb. velveeta cheese
2 T. flour*
Melt butter, add flour, milk and velveeta cheese. Stir until melted well.
Sandy, how did the sweet potato recipe go? If it was good I'd love to see the recipe! Sour cream apple pie... hmmm Jon loves apple pie... yeah I'd like to see it! P.S. If you like spicy food (which I do)... you can subsitute one or both of the following: Hot sausage (I use Jimmy Dean actually)... and/or Mexican Velveeta... I would just do one unless you really like hot food

Okay Amy...you asked for it: SOUTHERN CORNBREAD DRESSING (the only kind, as far as I'm concerned...hahaha) 3 cups crumbled corn bread (I make it from scratch in my grandmothers cast iron skillet 3 cups crumbled white bread diced onions and celery (I never measure) 3 large eggs 1/2 stick melted butter salt and pepper enough turkey or chicken broth to make the consistency fairly soupy Bake at 425 for about an hour YUMMMMMMMMM!!!!!! Here's my stuffing recipe but you have to know ahead of time I have an allergy to onions so I don't use them when I cook. First, as Carol does, I make my cornbread in a cast iron skillet so I'll give you the recipe for the cornbread before the stuffing (I use a BIG cast iron skillet): BUTTERMILK CORNBREAD: 3 cups Martha White Self-rising corn meal (or any self-rising so you don't have to add the baking powder) plus 1 cup regular flour 1 1/2 cups buttermilk plus 1/2 cup regular milk 1/4 cup bacon drippings (or, if you're worried about the cholesterol you can use vegetable oil but it's not the same) Three eggs First, preheat the oven to 425 degrees When the oven is heated put two tablespoons of oil (or bacon drippings) in your cast iron skillet and set it in the oven to heat. Mix the two flours then add the other ingredients in whatever way you want and mix them all together. By now the skillet should be nice and hot. Take it out of the oven and pour your batter into it. It should sizzle when the batter hits the oil. Return it to the oven and bake for at least 45 minutes (if you use a smaller skillet than mine) but mine takes about an hour and 10 minutes. When done remove from oven and set aside to cool. Now, on to the dressing: I usually buy a bag of Peppridge Farm or Brownberry stuffing mix (it's actually different kinds of bread already crushed and bagged for you) usually the Herb and/or Sage dressing. I use a very large bowl and crumble my cornbread in the bowl then add the bag of stuffing crumbs along with chopped celery then I use turkey broth or chicken broth (whichever I have at hand) and just keep adding it until the dressing holds together and is kind of sticky but not too sticky to handle when stuffing the turkey. This makes enough to stuff about a 20 pound turkey with a 13 x 9 x 2 cake pan full left to bake outside the bird. Now, for the gravy that goes with that, use your turkey broth and some of the drippings from the roasting pan. Put in a pan and bring to a boil on the stove. Take two tablespoons of cornstarch and add hot water to make a very thin liquid. Very carefully add a small bit to the boiling broth and stir continuously until it just starts to thicken. If it gets too thick just add a little hot water to the gravy. Hope you like it. Wanda

Wanda, AHHH can I come to your house for dinner? LOL that buttermilk cornbread sounds AWESOME. Ok... i know I'm from the south and my mom would be apalled... but I don't have a cast iron skillet .... are there special tricks to using one? Don't you have to "temper" it or something? Ok here's my FAVORITE Christmas cookie ... Most people call them Magic Bars... but I call them: Hello Dollies (not sure why... that's just what my fam calls them) INGREDIENTS: * 1/2 cup butter (4 ounces) * 1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs * 1 (14 oz.) can sweetened condensed milk * 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips * 1 1/3 cups flaked coconut (3 ounces) * 1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (I use pecans) PREPARATION: Preheat oven to 350° or 325° for glass pan. In 13 x 9 inch baking pan, melt butter in the preheating oven. Sprinkle graham cracker crumbs over butter; mix together and press over bottom of pan to form crust. Add the other ingredients in layers... then drizzle the whole can of condensed milk on the top evenly. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool thoroughly before cutting. Store loosely covered at room temperature or refrigerate. ************************************************ I'm so glad ya'll are posting here yay!!
