I'm wondering what medicine do you guys trust for heartworms in dogs... and then the flea/tick/mosquito thing I'm hearing a lot about Revolution and that is what our last vet prescribed. Sometimes I worry when there is one drug for so many things... is it really effective. Having a dog AND cats... we are facing buying a crapload of medicine. When we lived in Alaska we didn't have to worry but now we sure do. Do dogs get problems from mosquitos too? any info is needed!! ....trying to decide between heartguard, revolution, and advantage. Ames P.S. doh! I just read that mosquitos in dogs is what CAUSES heartworms.. got it LOL

I forget what we use for the heartworm, but it is the one that does NOT have ivermectin. Because it is supposed to cause serious side effects in australian shepherds and border collies. Our dogs get a shot for fleas and ticks. But having one med that takes care of it all sounds good to me! I mean, they will have the same stuff together in them whether it is in one dose or a couple different doses. And prolly cheaper in the long run.
T-Rex is getting cuter and cuter!!!!

Ames, we use Heartgard Plus (I notice that it does contain ivermectin). It's a monthly 'pill' that our dog thinks is a treat. She also gets an annual vaccine for lyme disease (from ticks). And ditto on T-Rex!

K, that means we use advantage! And we are going to start using the drops on the back of the neck for fleas and ticks. It's not too expensive and works very well for my daughter's dogs. We have both dogs on the same schedule, and today is the yearly vet day. OMG, we are going to be so broke, you pretty much need to mortgage the house to pay the vet bill! *e2a*duh, advantage is for fleas and ticks. We give them for heartworm is called Interceptor.

Ames- I use Frontline on Nigel and it hasn't caused him any problems in the 8 years I've been using it on him. He's a house dog and, although I know I probably should, I don't use an individual heartworm med for him. I used to use Filarabits but I don't think they even make them anymore. Hope that helps.

Thank you Toni! and Sandy.... Well my doggie is part border collie/shepherd LOL so I better not use the heartgard then... (although seems like we have used it before on her. I swear everytime we go to the vet we get a new recommendation. I've used at one time all the ones ya'll have mentioned! LOL I guess Revolution is just the new thang.... I'm so glad you said that tho Toni cuz I was about to buy the heartgard.. .it's the tried and true ... and BELIEVE me I know about the vet bill... in FACT... we actually bought insurance on our youngest pets! I know... most would think I'm crazy but my two oldest kitties that have now passed - they cost me thousands in their older years and it was very hard to come up with the money each time. And.. I'm one of those who would never have the heart not to help them/spend the money for their care. SO... we now have VPI pet insurance... so far we've been really happy with it! It covers the medicine and yearly stuff too! Just the MEDICINE is sooo expensive... Jaunty!!! I forgot!! I'd certainly love to see your input! So far now.. it's between Advantage, Interceptor (I've used both of those before)... or the all in one... Revolution thanks ya'll!

Ames, so the pet insurance is good, huh? I was going to check into it when we got our new dog but I haven't yet. When our old dog died it ended up costing us thousands too.
