I'm SOOO loving the furkid talk!!! and pics even better Toni .. your doggie looks soo much like my baby girl (Ashland). And I think I've said that Nigel looks like her too. She's a mutt... the doctors say she's a border collie/shepherd mix? Funny thing is ... she's not hyper AT ALL... I mean she runs and plays with you if she's outside but she's SOOO gentle and relaxed inside. She's an "angel" puppy I always say This is her: We got her at a pound when we lived in Oklahoma. Bless her heart. The people there said no one wanted her cuz of her long hair... Of course I fell in love. And she's been the best trained and sweetest dog I've EVER had. Before her I had only had poodles... and kitties. I lost my two awesome lifelong kitties recently. Puddin and Precious. I miss them bunches.. but here are my two little heathens now! LOL Lil' Kat: AS you can see... Lil Kat is a bit of a "joke" cuz she's BIG but here she is when we named her.. I had no idea she would get so big!! And here's my little Simmy (yep she's named after Simone
def not an apartment dog.
In most cases I'd have to agree that BC/AS would destroy a place but Nigel must be the exception to the rule cos he only gets walked before I go to work, when I come home for lunch and when I get home in the evening (which isn't much exercise) and he is an absolute angel in the apartment. He's never been destructive of anything except the toys he doesn't like. Maybe he's just an unusual BC mix. And it can't be the influence of his mother because she was a large rat terrier and we all know how hyper they can be. Maybe it's his age, since he'll be 9 in January, but I don't think so since he's been like this since he was a puppy. Oh well, I'm just glad I don't have to keep him in a kennel when I'm not home with him. He HATES that!

Oooh, Ames. Love your kitties. Simmy reminds me of my Suki. No one would have ever guessed her mother was coal black, her sister was a tortoiseshell (we named her Sabrina) and she had two sisters and a brother that were coal black like their mommy. Now, if we can just get Kimbo to post some pictures of her Dixie dog and Colton's Lady Simmy (also named for Simone who really impressed him in San Antonio). He was allowed to name the dog and that's what he called her.

Australian Cattle dogs (Sam) are not apartment dogs either, unless you do like Wanda did. We lived in an apartment with Sam as a pup and because of his high energy, we met with other energetic pets for early am play time/walks, went to the off leash dog park mid day for a long romp and had playtime with doggies every night. Sam was too tired to be naughty. He was very good indoors--- he still is very good indoors. Although I do have an incident to share... Oh and I used to take him to Pete & Mac's doggie daycare to play with other pups when I went shopping.
Nigel sounds a bit like Sam... Sam has this thing about stuffed dog toys and never outgrew the phase. He seriously thinks that their sole purpose is to be destuffed... once that is done, he is very happy.
I've got to scan some pics and load them into my photo bucket.

Amy, I love the pics of your fur-kids! They are so adorable. I had a Siamese named Molly... she passed away back in January (age 22 yrs) -- just before we moved up here. She would not have been able to tolerate the cold. My oh my, the stories Molly could tell. She had lived with all of my doggies.

Ames, it's just the picture. Inky is also 45 lbs, Penny is 63 lbs. Toni- I didn't know you had budgies as well.. OMG. I love budgies, especially the English ones...they're really fat and usually only come in olive green with yellow heads (very much like the wild ones) but I LOVE them... You have the kind of zoo I used to have: 4 cats, 4 dogs, 2 ferrets, 3 doves, 2 cockatiels, a peachfaced love bird, 2 zebra finches, an iguana, a guinea pig, 8 hamsters and a prairie dog. Now I'm down to one big couch potatoe dog (I adore him as you know) and by beloved Todd, the dove. Lots easier to take care of but it doesn't mean I wouldn't do it again if I could afford it. *e2a* I forgot the umbrella cockatoo and my two canaries...one was a chopper (the kind of song they sing) named "Chopper" and the other was a roller (again for the way their song is sung) who had a topknot that looked like an old Beatles haircut. His name was Paul (for you-know-who).

Well, we seem to attract animals that need homes. The birds were going to be let loose, so Darrell offered to take them. The rabbit (now deceased) was abandoned in a basement, so we took him in. All our various cats just appeared out of nowhere. The dogs are the only animals we actually acquired on purpose, oh and the fish when we had an aquarium. Darrell is such a soft touch! But we love them all, no matter how we got them.

But we love them all, no matter how we got them. I'm such a bad zookeeper, I forgot about the house rabbits we had...a total of four over the years. And the aquariums of fish.. angelfish were always my faves, especially the gold and black lace ones. Plus the numerous box turtles that were found. I even owned a hatchling 3-toed box turtle that I bought as well as newts and firebelly toads, tree frogs, African Claw-frogs in my aquarium and my strangest, most unusual purchased critter was a bullfrog named Barney that I had for three years before turning him back to the wild in a creek in the park. I only kept the box turtles til they recovered from their minor injuries then took them to the park to the creek and turned them loose. Robin owned a palamino horse for a while. I'll see if I can find a pic of him and post it here. Prince Albert was a dream to ride.

Hi Guys!! I can't believe this thread has been going on this long and I'm just now getting around to seeing it. This is the best thread evah! I'm missing all the fun. I love seeing everyones pets..they are all so adorable. I just want to kiss them all. lol Ames if you want my opinion on heartworm protection for your dogs...I give my dogs Sentinel. It's more cost efficient. The price goes by weight. Which the bigger the dog the more expensive. Especially if you go all year round heartworm protection or just go 6 months. Your in Florida now right? So you'll want the best protection. Do they have a tick scare there? Ask your vet? Here in MI we have a lot of deer and I have to give a annual Lymes vacc and I use a topical names Advantix. That kills fleas, ticks & mosquitoes. Thats the best topical on the market. When your using topicals it can get pricey. If your using Advantix you have to part the hair and squeeze a drop on the skin of the dog and run all the way down his back and by his tail. Topical can get greasy to at times. If using Advantix and you have cats...Be careful because it has permethrin in it and if cats get it on them...it could seriously hurt them and possibly kill them. So you want to keep the animals seperated at least over night. Back to Sentinel..I like Sentinel heartworm preventative because it is a one stop job. Sentinel takes care of Round, Hook, Whips worms & is a flea preventative. For bad flea infestations a capstar can be given in conjunction with Sentinel. (long story) Although Sentinel should be given with a meal. Sentinel works the same as Interceptor that Toni uses, except it's one step better...it kills fleas. Technically it doesn't kill the flea ....it sterilzes the female flea so she can not reproduce. She can still bite the dog but when she lays her eggs and they fall off the dog and into the carpet or couch(if you have a couch potato)..weeks later they never hatch. The female has ingested (from biting the dog) lufenuron. The lufenuon is what keeps the eggs from hatching. Kills the pupae. They cannot survive. No blood meal. So to me this is worth the price in gold. Because Sentinel works systematically and prevents future flea infestations. Ames I hope this helps. Sorry If I ran on & on. I just wanted you to understand and make a educational decision on what is best for your dog in their environment. Depends on their environment and their lifestyle. If you have any other questions I'll be happy to help. For the record...I am not a doctor. I am a vet tech. Every animal hospital does things differently. I'll gather up some pics of my fur-kids later....Gotta go for now #purple# xo #bearhug#

I almost forgot...when I mentioned in the Capstar can be used in conjunction with Sentinel...I meant if your dog already has fleas and if he has one you can be pretty sure they are everywhere in your carpet.. Anyway the Capstar is a pill you give to your dog and it will kill the fleas in a few hours. (I think))pretty sure) Anyway I know the Capstar is a very safe medication and it will go in and do it it's job right away and be out of the system within 24 hours. It's so safe you could use it everyday until the flea problem is gone. Then continue with Sentinel as a maintenance heartworm preventative. Like I said before Sentinel can get costly intially...it is worth it in the long run because your only using Sentinel. With Interceptor...you still have a worry about fleas and would have to buy additional topical products to compensate. Like Advantage,Frontline or Advantix. So heartworm preventative can cost up to $100.00 for a 12 month supply Sentinel about $120 something depending on weight of dog for 12 months. Interceptor you still have to pay additional flea prevention if needed. I hope this helps!

By the way Heart Gaurd is a client favorite at my office but it kills heart worm,hook work & round worm...but doesn't have the Whip work protection. Which if your pet gets whipworm....not good it will live in your enviroment for months and years. Hard to kill whips one in your yard... But the Dogs love as a chunky treat! That worth all the $ #thsmiley_peace#
